"Tunbridge ware is a form of decoratively inlaid woodwork characteristic of the spa town of Tunbridge Wells in Kent in the 18th and 19th centuries. The decoration typically comprises a mosaic of many very small pieces of different coloured woods that form a pictorial vignette. Shaped rods and slivers of wood were first carefully glued together, then cut into many thin slices of identical pictorial veneer with a fine saw. Elaborately striped and feathered bandings for framing were pre-formed in a similar fashion." The date is 1880 - 1900.

It is marked Pat. No. 257529 in the center of the clip. This sterling bookmark was made in Birmingham England in 1921 by G W Lewis as indicated by the hallmarks. The top has a glass enclosed piece of a butterfly wing in iridescent blue. It is still quite vibrant after 95+ years.
